The crucial time of the year has finally come: on March 28, April 2 and 4 the 1997 Draft was held at the Argodome, the historic site which is also the home of the Pontevecchio Mikes.

The most notable event of the whole draft was the conspicuous absence of Mr. Flower, knocked to a hospital bed by a mysterious, nagging virus probably contracted via modem. He was on line, however, dictating his draft choices and bids from the hospital telephone (in the middle of the night...) to his German wife who was with the other owners at the Argodome. She was unanimously voted "Owners' League Wife Of The Year".

As for the Draft itself, the beginning of a new baseball season has the owners hungry for news, hoping to spot some great performance by their newly-acquired players. At first sight, it looks like the Mikes emerge as solid a team as ever, with great improvements by the Topos and the Flowers. Brokers and Pachos look like second-tier teams, but very close to contention if their key players display a nice season. Burberries, Bucks and Candies seem a little farther from the best.
The great effort from the Bidons in the successful pursue of top starter Jeff Fassero has probably left that team depleted in too many areas. Look for a blockbuster trade sometime down the road.

Of course, as the season develops, you'll be able to follow the players stats by teams, and decide which team deserves the favorite and front-runner label.
Right now, you can check a team-by-team roster analysis, along with a bit of history, in the Teams page. A complete draftees list is also available.

Shortly after the Draft, the first trade of the year sent Dave Hollins from the Candies to the Mikes for Carlos Garcia. For a complete recap of all the year's trades, see the Trades List Page, which appears thanks to the Flowers' archive site.
